Plumbing Help in Redondo Beach

Redondo Beach shares a long border with west Torrance and a lot of its housing history. The differences that matter for plumbing are who supplies the water, and how close to the ocean the pipe sits.

Which utility is yours

Redondo Beach does not run its own water system. Cal Water serves the city from its Rancho Dominguez district, which also covers Hermosa Beach, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and parts of Torrance. Golden State Water's Southwest system serves part of Redondo Beach as well. Which one sends your bill decides who you call about the meter, the curb valve and pressure on the street side, and whose rate schedule a leak is billed at.

Cal Water has been replacing mains in the city: a 2026 project in southeast Redondo laid about 1,800 feet of new pipe. Work like that can bring a short spell of air or discoloured water at the tap afterwards. Run a cold tap for a few minutes before assuming the house plumbing is at fault.

North Redondo houses

Parts of North Redondo look a lot like West Torrance: 1950s single-storey houses, mixed within a few blocks with townhouses that replaced original lots. The houses that remain carry the same risks as their Torrance neighbours, copper under the slab and clay laterals, and a slab leak shows up the same way, as a warm floor or a meter that will not stop. A townhouse adds a question a detached house does not have: whether the leaking line is yours or belongs to the association.

Near the water

In South Redondo and along the coast, salt air works on anything metal outside. Hose bibs, exposed copper at the meter and the water heater vent cap corrode faster than they would a few miles inland. A brass hose bib that has gone green and crusty, or a gate valve at the house that no longer turns, is worth replacing before the day it is needed in a hurry.

A shutoff valve that will not turn is a small job now and a big one during a leak. Call and ask about replacing it.

Permits are Redondo Beach’s, not Torrance’s

A water heater replacement, repipe or sewer repair in Redondo Beach goes through the City of Redondo Beach building division, with its own forms and inspections. The state rules travel with you: tank heaters must be strapped, and the company doing the work needs a C-36 plumbing licence from the Contractors State License Board.

Redondo Beach questions

Who supplies water in Redondo Beach?

Cal Water serves much of the city from its Rancho Dominguez district, and Golden State Water serves part of it. Your bill names the utility.

Is a townhouse slab leak my problem or the HOA’s?

It depends on where the line runs and what your governing documents say about pipes serving one unit. Get the leak located first, then take the result to the association.

Does coastal air affect indoor plumbing?

Not much indoors. Outside it speeds up corrosion on hose bibs, exposed copper and vent caps, especially within a mile or so of the beach.
