Emergency Plumbing in Torrance: The First Ten Minutes
Before any phone call: stop the water. What you do in the next ten minutes decides how much floor, drywall and cabinetry you lose, and none of it needs a plumber.

Minute one: the main shutoff
Most Torrance houses have a main shutoff where the supply line enters the house, often on the front or side wall near a hose bib, and every house has the meter valve at the curb box. A gate valve turns clockwise until it stops; a quarter-turn ball valve closes when the handle is across the pipe. If the house valve will not move, the curb valve usually needs a meter key or a wrench.
Find both today, not during the emergency. Old gate valves sometimes seize and sometimes leak once moved; if yours will not turn, that alone is a reason to have it replaced.
Then, depending on what is happening
A burst or spraying pipe
Main off. Open a tap at the lowest point in the house to drain the lines. If water is near outlets or ceiling lights, switch off that circuit at the panel if you can reach it dry.
A hot-water slab leak
Close the cold inlet valve on top of the water heater. That stops hot water flowing to the leak while the rest of the house still has cold. Turn the heater to vacation or pilot so it does not fire on an empty loop.
Sewage coming up a drain
Stop using water everywhere in the house, including the dishwasher and washing machine. Each flush adds to what comes back up. If the cleanout is accessible and safe, removing its cap can let the backup spill outside rather than into the shower.
A gas smell
Leave the house, leave doors open, and do not touch switches or use a phone inside. From outside, call 911 or the gas company. A plumber comes after the utility has made it safe.
After the earthquake
Do not shut off the gas at the meter after a quake unless you smell gas, hear it escaping or see other signs of a leak, and only if it is safe to do so; once it is off, only the gas company can turn it back on, and after a big quake that can take days. Water is different: if a line has broken, close the main. The earthquake shutoff guide covers both in detail.
What to tell the plumbing company
Once the water is off, call. Say what happened, where, whether the water is now off, and whether anything electrical got wet. A photo helps. The company sets its own hours and response, and this site cannot promise either, so if the water is stopped and the house is safe, the honest question is whether it needs someone tonight or first thing tomorrow.
- Is the water off at the main, and does it stay off?
- Hot side, cold side, drain, or not sure?
- Any water near electrical outlets, the panel or ceiling lights?
- Is there a second bathroom or a working toilet?
Water off and the house safe? Call now and describe it, or send the form with a photo.
What emergency work costs
Expect a higher call-out fee at night, on weekends and on holidays; some companies double their standard rate. The repair itself is priced like the daytime job. Stopping the water yourself and booking the morning slot is often the cheaper path when nothing is still running.
Common questions
Where is my main water shutoff in Torrance?
Usually on an outside wall where the line enters the house, often near a front hose bib, plus the meter valve in the box near the curb. Some houses have one in the garage near the water heater.
Should I turn off the water heater during a leak?
If the leak is on the hot side or the heater itself, yes: close the cold inlet and set the heater to pilot or vacation. An empty tank heating with no water can damage it.
Can I use the toilet during a sewer backup?
No. Every flush feeds the backup. Use a neighbour’s, or wait until the line has been cleared.
Will a plumber come at 2am?
Some do, at a premium. This site does not set or promise response times; the company tells you what they can do when you call.
